Quality Assurance (QA) For X Ray Equipments

QA programs are important for X Ray departments to ensure high quality patient images and safe working environment. It should not be seen as only a regulatory requirement but an important cause to ensure high quality radiographs. It’s an important tool to ensure conformance to built-in design safety of the equipment, consistent and accurate exposures to obtain optimal images for correct and accurate diagnosis of diseases which effectively results in optimized radiation safety of the staff and patients. Therefore, requirement of periodic quality assurance by all the users of medical diagnostic x-ray equipment is mandatory.

QA tests are a set of standardized tests conducted in order to detect performance issues with X Ray equipment in comparison to its original level of performance. Such x ray machine inspection can lead to immediate corrective steps to maintain quality of X Ray images and ensure a safer work environment.

Also, it should be noted that responsibility of QA tests lies with X Ray facility in charge and not with AERB.

Who performs the quality assurance test?

Quality Assurance Tests are performed by engineers who are trained at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai.

How QA tests are performed:

The tests are performed using following tools manufactured by Raysafe, Sweden who are the worldwide leader in X Ray Radiation Dosimetry Management. These are the best available tools for X Ray machine inspection.

•
Survey Detector
•
RF Detector
•
Mammography Detector
•
Radiography & Fluoroscopy Dosimeter
•
Phantom

Quality Assurance testing is required for the following Machines:

•
X Ray Machine (Fixed & Mobile)
•
X Ray Machine (Fluoroscopy)
•
Portable X Ray Machines
•
Digital Radiography (DR)
•
C Arm
